Black Fungus: Symptoms, Prevention & Treatments

“Mucormycosis is a serious but rare fungal infection caused by a group of molds called Mucormycetes. These molds live throughout the environment. Mucormycosis/Black Fungus mainly affects people who have health problems or take medicines that lower the body’s ability to fight germs and sickness.”

According to CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)

Over 8,800 people have been infected with Black fungus/Mucormycosis across India, union minister Sadananda Gowda tweeted on May 22, 2021.

Right now it is a concern for the people who are recovering or recently recovered from covid and have weaker immune system. They must take care of themselves.
According to the experts one should not consume any steroids without consulting their doctors, especially if they are diabetic and covid positive at the same time.

Symptoms of Black Fungus : If you have these symptoms then consult your doctor immediately. They will examine you clinically. If the infection is strongly suspected or confirmed, you may need treatment with anti fungal medication and surgery.

  • Dark Fluid or Bleeding from the nose
  • Pain around the eyes
  • Toothache / Loosening of teeth
  • Pain in different parts of face and just above the nose
  • Rashes on body
  • Chest pain
  • Dry Skin
  • Difficulty in Breathing

Step Taken by Central Government :

Prevention :

  1. Use mask if you are visiting dusty construction sites.
  2. Wear shoes and gloves while handling soil (gardening), moss or manure.
  3. Maintain personal hygiene.

Conclusion :

Mucormycosis is a rare but serious infection and needs to be treated with prescription antifungal medicine, like Amphotericin-B, Posaconazole, or Isavuconazole. These medicines are given through a vein (Amphotericin-B, Posaconazole, Isavuconazole) or by mouth (Posaconazole, Isavuconazole).
